Markus was born and raised in Munich (Germany), but went on to read Electrical Engineering at Cambridge University (UK), where he is currently enrolled as an MEng student. His research focuses on new hybrid, two-dimensional materials for the purposes of advances in optoelectronic technologies. He took part in the Cambridge-MIT exchange program in his Junior year, where he joined the AITI team.
